Tangerang records an 80-percent FMD recovery rate among livestock

The recovery rate of livestock affected by foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the area had reached 80 percent of the total 502 cases, the Tangerang Agriculture and Food Security Office stated.

"Of the total cases of livestock infected with foot and mouth disease, (there are) 502 cases. Currently, 80 percent, or around 400 animals, have (made recovery)," head of the Tangerang Agriculture and Food Security Office, Asep Jatnika, stated in Tangerang on Tuesday.

Jatnika noted that ever since the discovery of cases of infection in Tangerang District on June 25, his administration immediately addressed the situation by conducting quarantine and giving medicine and vitamins to the sick animals.

They also routinely sterilize and disinfect cages and animal nurseries to prevent the further spread of the virus.

Jatnika said that after all the efforts were made, more than a hundred livestock were suspected of being infected by the virus, all of which were still in the recovery process. Thus, people and breeders should not harbor excessive concern.

"We urge the public to report if an animal suspected of being infected by FMD is found among their livestock, while there is still time for us to give treatment, and later, when it is the time for the Eid sacrifice, they are really healthy," he stated.

He remarked that the Tangerang district government, Banten Province, has currently received 600 doses of the FMD vaccine, which will be administered to split-hoofed livestock with healthy conditions, with the objective of limiting the spread of animal diseases effectively. Now, we have received 600 doses of the FMD vaccine from the (central government), which is used for the first stage of the first vaccine for animals," he stated.

The FMD vaccination for livestock in Tangerang District will be conducted in three stages: the first, second, and booster or the third stage.

As for livestock subjected to a medical examination and are of sufficient age, a certificate would be issued as a sign that the animal was healthy and fit for consumption.

"Obviously, for the need for vaccines, we really require a lot. (This is) because from the population data alone, there are 58 thousand. Hence, we need about 60 percent of the vaccine doses," he concluded.

Authorities found 46 migrants dead inside a tractor-trailer on Monday in San Antonio, Texas, the city's fire department said, in what appears to be one of the most, deadly recent incidents of human smuggling along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The San Antonio Fire Department said 16 other people found inside the trailer were transported to the hospital for heat stroke and exhaustion, including four minors. Officials also said three people were in custody following the incident.

The truck was found next to railroad tracks in a remote area on the city's southern outskirts.

Mexico's Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard called the suffocation of the migrants in the truck the "tragedy in Texas" on Twitter and said the local consulate was end route to the scene, though the nationalities of the victims had not been confirmed.

There have been a record number of migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border in recent months, which has sparked criticisms of the immigration policies of U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democrat.

Temperatures in San Antonio, which is about 160 miles (250 km) from the Mexican border, swelled to a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) on Monday with high humidity. In July 2017, ten migrants died after being transported in a tractor-trailer that was discovered by San Antonio police in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The driver, James Matthew Bradley, Jr., was sentenced the following year to life in prison for his role in the smuggling operation.

Mr. Jatnika noted that since the case was discovered on Tuesday, All animals infected with the virus are still recovering.
